Klaus (2019)
A spoiled postman and a reclusive toymaker accidentally invent Santa Claus.
Jesper, the postal academy's worst student, is exiled to a feuding island town above the Arctic Circle, where a mysterious woodsman named Klaus and a simple act of kindness start changing everything. Netflix's first animated original film, hand-drawn with painterly light. It deserved its Oscar nomination and then some.
The first animated feature Netflix ever released announced the streamer as a real animation power. Sergio Pablos — who created the Despicable Me concept — returned to hand-drawn animation and rebuilt its lighting from scratch, so every frame looks like a storybook painting with volumetric light. The origin story it invents for Santa, a selfish postman and a reclusive toymaker thawing a feuding town, won the Annie Award for Best Feature and an Oscar nomination. In an era of sequels, Klaus proved an original, hand-crafted Christmas film could still feel like a classic instantly.
