Spirited (2022)
A Christmas Carol told from the ghosts' side of the haunting.
Every Christmas Eve, Jacob Marley and the three ghosts run a redemption operation — and their current target, a ruthless PR strategist played by Ryan Reynolds, starts haunting them back. Will Ferrell is the Ghost of Christmas Present with a secret of his own. Big songs, bigger feelings, and a genuinely clever angle on Dickens.
Nineteen years after Elf, Will Ferrell came back to Christmas on the other side of the haunting — a Ghost of Christmas Present nearing retirement, desperate to redeem Ryan Reynolds' unredeemable media consultant. Sean Anders tells Dickens as a full movie musical with songs by Pasek and Paul, the Dear Evan Hansen and Greatest Showman team, including a tap number about how 'good afternoon' became an insult. Apple backed it as a flagship holiday release, and its question lingers past the jokes: do people actually change, or just rebrand?
