Happiest Season (2020)
Abby plans to propose at Christmas — then learns her girlfriend hasn't come out to her family yet.
Abby and Harper are heading home for Christmas, where Abby plans to propose. The catch arrives en route: Harper has never told her conservative, image-conscious parents she's gay, so Abby must spend the holidays posing as her 'orphan roommate' while Harper's father's mayoral campaign turns the house into a showroom of family perfection.
Clea DuVall built Happiest Season partly from her own experience, and it shows in the details — the performance of the perfect family, the ex trotted out for appearances, the friend (Dan Levy, superb) telling the truth nobody else will. Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis carry both the farce and the ache, and Mary Steenburgen's Tipper is a comic creation with real teeth. It is a Christmas rom-com with genuine stakes: what it costs to be hidden at the table, and what it takes to be loved out loud.
