With his chiseled, leading man looks and imposing physical presence, Leland B. Martin seems destined for movie star fame from birth. But his path to success was paved through years of struggle, rejection, and determination to overcome all obstacles. A native of San Francisco, Martin burst onto the entertainment scene through the power of viral videos produced with his University of California, Santa Barbara improv group.

This taste of fame ignited a relentless drive to succeed as an actor. Martin trained vigorously, sculpting his body and mind into prime leading man shape. Yet he found doors closed at every turn, as the industry remained confoundingly blind to his charisma. Refusing defeat, Martin wrote, directed, and produced his own projects while awaiting recognition.

His perseverance finally paid off with a breakout role on the sitcom The McCarthys in 2014. Though short-lived, this opportunity set the stage for Martin’s casting on hit shows Riverdale and All American. On screen, he overflows with virility and swagger. Off screen, he advocates tirelessly for LGBTQ rights and greater casting diversity.

At 34, Martin seems poised at the precipice of all-consuming stardom. But whether or not greater fame comes, he inspires through his efforts to break boundaries and manifest his dreams. Martin’s story illuminates the realizations that drive and humility conquer all.
