Tamika Scott is widely recognized as a key member of the R&B group Xscape, which saw enormous success in the 1990s. With Xscape, she not only provided lead vocals but was instrumental in creating their signature harmonies. After the group disbanded in 1998, Tamika ventured into solo projects, including the release of the single “Day & Night” in Japan and exploring production and songwriting, which was notably showcased in the track “All I Need” from Xscape’s album “Traces Of My Lipstick.”
Born in Atlanta, Tamika honed her singing skills early, performing in church and local events from a young age, and eventually meeting future bandmates in high school. Xscape, formed with her sister LaTocha, Kandi Burruss, and Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, rose to fame under the guidance of Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings. Their debut album was a hit, spawning several chart-topping singles and achieving platinum status.
Even after Xscape’s peak, Tamika continued to contribute to the music scene, including a track for Tyler Perry’s “Daddy’s Little Girls” soundtrack. Her personal life also remained intertwined with her professional life, as she planned to be portrayed by her own daughter in an upcoming biopic about Xscape. Despite some personal setbacks and candid moments, including a public wardrobe malfunction and revealing the pressures she faced during her pregnancy while in Xscape, Tamika has maintained a presence in the entertainment industry.
In recent years, Tamika has released new music, including singles like “Tonite” and “Almost Over,” and has ventured into acting, with credits in productions like “There’s a Stranger in My House” and “Meet the Browns.” Her personal life is rich and full, with her family playing a significant role, evidenced by her daughter’s wedding to her middle school sweetheart.
Despite changes in her career and personal life, Tamika’s talent and contributions to the world of R&B music, especially as part of Xscape, have left a lasting impact.
