Tamar Estine Braxton, star of the Black Christmas movies, Christmas Angel and Throwback Holiday is an unstoppable force in the American music scene, was born into the melodious Braxton family in Severn, Maryland, on March 17, 1977. She emerged from a household steeped in harmony and gospel, with her father, Michael Braxton, at the helm as a pastor, and her mother, Evelyn, nurturing the voices of Tamar and her siblings. The youngest of six, Tamar’s innate talent was evident as she sang with the innocence and clarity of a toddler.
The 1990s marked the dawn of The Braxtons, an R&B ensemble featuring Tamar and her sisters, weaving their voices into the tapestry of the era’s music scene. Their first single, “Good Life,” though modestly received, was but a prelude to their true potential. It was a time of tumultuous change when the industry’s interest in another girl group waned, causing the original ensemble to disband, with each thread of The Braxtons following its path.
Tamar, undeterred, soared on as a solo artist, signing with DreamWorks Records and in 2000 releasing her self-titled album, “Tamar.” It was an eclectic blend that failed to cement her status in the R&B firmament, leading to a premature parting of ways with the label. Yet, her creative spirit remained unquashed, manifesting in collaborations and background vocals for her sister Toni’s projects, her voice seamlessly supporting and enriching the music they created together.
As the 2000s progressed, Braxton’s determination paid off. She reemerged with a newfound vigor under Casablanca Records, owned by industry magnate Tommy Mottola, setting the stage for her triumphant return. Despite her prior setbacks, Tamar’s resolve only grew stronger, and by 2013, her second studio album, “Love and War,” unveiled under Epic Records, catapulted her to new heights, coming in at a striking number two on the Billboard 200.
Her versatility shone through beyond the recording studio as she stepped onto the screen in “Braxton Family Values,” a candid reality series revealing the intricacies of the Braxton dynasty. Additionally, Tamar co-hosted the dynamic talk show “The Real,” further showcasing her magnetic personality and earning her two Daytime Emmy nominations.
Tamar’s life took on a new dimension of joy with the birth of her son, Logan Vincent Herbert, in June 2013, an event that she balanced with the launch of her Christmas album, “Winter Loversland,” and the preparation of her candid special “Listen Up: Tamar Braxton.”
Despite navigating the turbulent waters of the music industry, Braxton’s talent and tenacity have earned her an illustrious array of accolades, including a BET Award and three Soul Train Music Awards. Her name has graced the Grammy nominations list, echoing the depth and breadth of her musical impact.
Tamar’s journey through the music industry reflects a narrative of resilience, a testament to her unwavering commitment to her craft. Her story is far more than a tale of albums and awards; it is an ongoing odyssey of a woman whose voice refuses to be silenced, whose spirit remains unbreakable, and whose legacy continues to evolve with each note she sings.
