Home Alone (1990)
Eight years old, home alone, and the house is a fortress.
The McCallisters fly to Paris and leave Kevin behind — a dream come true until two burglars target the street and Kevin turns the house into a symphony of paint cans, tar, and blowtorches. The biggest comedy of its era, with John Williams scoring it like a classic and Macaulay Culkin running the whole show.
John Hughes wrote the script after imagining his own son left behind on a family trip, and the result became the highest-grossing comedy of its era. Macaulay Culkin was ten years old and carries long stretches of the film completely alone, while Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern turn cartoon violence into slow-motion ballet. John Williams' score treats the booby traps like a Christmas symphony. The Winnetka, Illinois house is now a genuine landmark. It is the rare family comedy that plays just as well to the kids watching Kevin as to the parents who were Kevin's age in 1990.
